The liver located on the right side of the abdomen is the largest organ in the body.  It is often called the body’s chemical powerhouse because it:

» Converts food into nutrients the body can use (for example, the liver produces bile to help break down fats)

Liver transplantation:

Global Hospitals is one of the premier centers in India, which has proven expertise in managing end-stage liver disease and undertaking liver transplantation. We undertake both Adult and Pediatric, Living Related and Cadaveric Liver Transplants. Liver transplant outcomes at Global are among the nation's best and are on par with the best centers in the world because of our multidisciplinary approach and seamless teamwork. Our liver transplant team comprising a Hepatologist, Surgeons, a Transplant Psychiatrist, Diagnostics and Pathology experts, advanced-practice nurses and social workers is able to take on some of the most complex and challenging patients.

Transplantation is offered to patients whose livers are no longer able to properly function, and will eventually shut down. Liver transplantation refers to removal of a diseased liver and its replacement by a healthy one. A segment of the liver can be taken from a close relative or friend and implanted in the recipient. Both segments (the remaining section of the donor's liver, and the portion received by the patient) will regenerate and grow to fit the needs of each individual. The liver is the only organ in the body, which regenerates itself within a few weeks. The donor does not suffer any impairment in his or her liver functioning.

A liver can also be harvested from a brain dead person for transplantation. In adults, the most common reason for liver transplantation is Cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can be caused by viruses such as hepatitis B and C, alcohol, autoimmune liver diseases, buildup of fat in the liver, and hereditary liver diseases. In children, the most common cause for liver transplantation is biliary atresia, a condition in which bile ducts, which carry bile out of the liver, are missing or damaged.  The obstructed bile causes cirrhosis. Liver cancer and benign liver tumors may also warrant transplantation.
